January - A time for new beginnings . . . A time for resolutions . . .

It’s the New Year! How did the year roll away so fast? It’s hard to imagine, but time stands still for no one.

This New Year , I want to encourage you to not stay focused on unfinished goals of the last year, but to rather learn from them and plan your to-do-list for the year ahead. I always stress on the fact that success and fulfillment are intentional. Nobody can take away your dreams, unless you allow them to do so. As Martin Luther once said, ''You cannot stop birds from flying over your head, but you can certainly stop them from building a nest in your head!’’. This is a fact. There are some things that are not under your control, but many others that are. Let us focus on what you can zero in on, and make changes to. These are the types of resolutions that I would like to make, resolutions that are not influenced by external factors and those that have a direct impact on my life.

Resolutions vary on different levels. They may be goals for your weight, a decision to focus on exercise, an improvement in one’s expertise and skills, investments that you wish to make, a decision to stay disciplined, a goal to be a better student, or a decision to be more involved in your children's life, etc. These resolutions will involve determination, discipline, and faith in your ability to keep this goal in your focus throughout this entire year. Instead of shooting for the stars, let us focus on a few goals that you can accomplish this year! Little drops of success will lead to an avalanche of blessing and fulfillment.

As a physician, wife, and mother, I encourage you to stay hopeful and determined this entire year. You are a unique creation, there is no copy of yourself in the universe! In reality, you have been fearfully and wonderfully made. There are goals for you to accomplish, victories to be realized, and peace to be pursued. Surround yourself with people who will be conducive to your goals and stay away from pessimists. Pessimism is a dream killer, and every day of your life is much too precious to be tattered away by the comments and remarks of people who come to put you down, rather than pull you up. When you rise above the status quo, there are always going to be naysayers, these people feel it’s their singular responsibility to put you in your place and tell you what you should and should not do. Stay far away from these people and run your race with vigor and determination. At the end of your life, you will be judged by what you have accomplished and not on what other people say. Having said that, Live this coming year with a sense of courage and hope.
