Ingredient Spotlight : Tofu

Tofu is made from condensed Soy Milk that is curdled and pressed into solid blocks. This food staple originated in China and is a rich source of protein and is a versatile ingredient which is now used worldwide. We will go on to delve into the health benefits of this ingredient.

Vital Ingredients: Tofu is rich in isoflavones, proteins, iron, calcium, and minerals like selenium, manganese, magnesium, copper, zinc, phosphorus, and Vitamin B. It has all the 9 essential amino acids that are needed for our bodies.

Digestibility: Tofu has a cheese-like structure and is easily digestible.

Role in Cancer prevention: Tofu’s isoflavones may protect against breast cancer by competitively binding estrogen receptors. The isoflavones may also play a role in curtailing cancer cell growth by inhibiting enzymes involved in signaling of growth factors. There is also evidence that points to tofu’s protective effects against prostate cancer when consumed by men.

Role in Heart Disease prevention: It is a well-known fact that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, like legumes and Tofu, when accompanied by a low-fat diet and regular exercise, can reduce the risk of heart disease. The isoflavones in Soy may have an anti-inflammatory effect on our blood vessels and may also improve elasticity—this further underscores its heart protective effects. The saponins in Tofu may also play a role in healthy cholesterol balance.

Role in Sugar metabolism: Tofu may also contribute to healthy blood sugar levels and insulin levels and may have a beneficial effect on insulin resistance. This makes it a favorable food for individuals with impaired glucose metabolism.

Tofu is a nutritious food choice and it is important to know some of its benefits, and having said that, this does not mean we should bypass time tested screening procedures for breast cancer, prostate cancer, etc. As always, I wish you to stay focused on your health, stay in touch with your healthcare provider, and live long and strong!
