Sage: S. officinalis

Sage or S. officinalis is a popular herb that is native to the Mediterranean region and has been used in culinary and Herbal medicine for a long time. It belongs to the genus Salvia and is the largest member of Lamiaceae family. The plant is known for its aromatic properties and myriad of applications. In this section we will discuss about some of the medicinal properties of this herb and its composition as follows:

  • Composition: Sage is a natural source of flavonoids, terpenoids, and polyphenols like rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, and caffeic acid. These are natural sources of antioxidants with antibacterial activity that help fight oxidative damage. Ursolic acid, which is also an important component of sage, has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Sage also contains camphor and toxic thujones. The normal usage of Sage is considered safe, however excessive usage may augment the toxic component.

  • Cognition and Mood: Studies in Aromatherapy have demonstrated the beneficial effects of sage and its positive effects in mood and cognition. It positively affects alertness and calmness.

  • Anti-cancer effects: Research shows that extracts from this herb seem to negatively affect tumor growth by decreasing angiogenesis of blood flow to the tumor cells. The ursolic acid component seems to play a role in inhibiting angiogenesis and tumor spread. This evidence is still under experimental studies and sage must never be viewed as a replacement for conventional medications prescribed by your healthcare provider. Sage water extracts seem to have a protective effect against DNA damage secondary to reactive oxygen species.

  • Effects on Fat Absorption: Research shows that Sage may play a beneficial role in lipid metabolism and control, therefore it may have a beneficial role in weight management.

  • Role in Hot Flashes: Sage also has some beneficial effects in helping with the symptoms of postmenopausal hot flashes.

In conclusion, we summarize that Sage has a wide array of beneficial effects in addition to its use as a culinary ingredient. The purpose of our discussion is to highlight that “Food” has health properties, but I’m in no way advocating that this is a replacement to traditional medications prescribed by your physician. Having said that, I pray that you will keep your health in center focus and live Long and Strong!
