Kumquat

Kumquats are citrus fruits that are native to China, but are also found in Japan, South America, and other locations that are feasible for their growth. The four major cultivated varieties include Fortunella japonica, Fortunella margarita, Fortunella crassifolia, and Fortunella hindsii.

Nutritional benefits and applications:

This citrus fruit is a rich source of vitamins, carotene, pectin, phosphorus, calcium, and several flavonoids, terpenoids and phytochemicals that are beneficial to health. They are rich in essential oils. They are used in various culinary applications like jellies, jams, mousses, marmalades, liqueurs, sauces, and candies

Role as an Immune Stimulator:

Aging and stress play a role in decreasing our immunity against various diseases. Natural Killer cells play an important role in our immune response. Beta-cryptoxanthin, a natural component of kumquats, was shown to play a role in Natural killer cell activation in experimental models, so it may be beneficial to include this fruit as part of a healthy diet. Limonene, another component of kumquats, was also shown to have immune-boosting effects.

Anti-bacterial, Anti-oxidant, and Anti-fungal effects:

The essential oils in Kumquats have antioxidant properties, by helping to protect our bodies against oxidant damage that occurs via aging, food, and environmental agents. Apigenin, another flavonoid component of kumquat, is also noted to have cancer preventive properties. These essential oils also have inhibitory effects on bacteria of both gram-positive and gram-negative strains and fungi like candida—this points to their possible role in food preservation and cooking. I must point out that this fruit must not be used in replacement for conventional antibiotics prescribed by your healthcare professional and must be considered as a food and part of a healthy diet.

This bright orange and yellow colored fruit packs a punch and should be considered as part of a healthy diet. As always, stay in active communication with your doctor, keep your health in center focus, and live long and strong!
